Hoard

This was published in the Hampshire Young Writer's collection in 2003.
There was certainly was some influence from Tolkien's Smaug and Pratchett's dragons in 'Guards! Guards!' but I was also experiemnting with allegory and extended metaphor. It's sort of a sonnet.

Hoard
Radiant, crimson his sprawling coils
Ever guarding over these precious spoils:
Rubies and gold from foreign soils,
With sumptuous greed the dragon’s blood boils.
Silver rings and crowns from kings of lost long name,
Amethysts reflected glitter in the flame,
Opals and rhinestones add to the dragon’s fame,
Such rich rewards from those who tried to tame.
Savage, quixotic his umber eyes rest
On the charred remains of many a quest
Those weak-willed to assault the sparkling nest
Their skeletal grins to newcomers jest.
Material greed leads to smouldering breath
But all are equal before charcoal death.
